News Movement, based and operating in Flint, Mich., will prepare students enrolled in our Journalism 101 program to think as multimedia journalists. Opportunities will exist for these same students to have their journalistic works published through Flint Beat, a digital and print news outlet whose hyper-local coverage is focused on the city of Flint. Students who graduate the News Movement program and pursue journalism as an education and/or career will also take first priority in paid-internship opportunities offered by Flint Beat.
JOURNALISM 101: Community through News
Students will be plugged in to idealist journalism, as it relates to creating journalistic text and visuals. This part of the program will afford students, instructors, and guests, engagement in meaningful discussions about all things news and how a free press empowers community.
JOURNALISM 101: News Writing / Reporting
Students will learn the fundamentals of news writing and reporting; The art of interviewing; News writing versus Feature writing; And how to get your news articles published.
JOURNALISM 101: Charting News / Visual Reporting
Participants will learn how to 'grab readers’ through visual reporting. Participants will learn the basics about photos, videos, illustrations, information graphics, page design, and political comics. Students too will gain familiarity with some software of the Adobe Creative Cloud suite. These software applications are vital for the creation and manipulation of visuals and text, as well overall desktop publishing.
JOURNALISM 101: Photography
Participants will learn the basics of compositional elements including leading lines, repetition, juxtaposition and use of layering; Using light and color when shooting photographs for various news platforms; And understanding the D-SLR (Digital single lens reflex) camera.
JOURNALISM 101: Videography
Participants will learn the basics of Visual grammar; Rule of thirds and basic camera shots; Headroom, lead space and depth of field; Boom microphones and other audio peripherals; Studio lighting and backdrops; And photo editing using Adobe Premiere.
